How I Choose A Book
For me personally, I find it difficult to put time aside during school term to sit back and really enjoy reading a good book. Consequently, I rarely ever read during term. That said, once school breaks up, the first place I head to is the local City Council library where I will browse the shelves looking for things that catch my eye.
I recall telling my Year 8 English class that I stroll up and down the aisles with my head turned on a ludicrous angle, looking at the spines of books as they sit on the shelf. People look at me oddly. But hey, it's just my own unique way of discovering a book to read. I don't tend to seek out a particular author whose work I've enjoyed in the past. I kind of leave it up to fate really... whatever happens to be on the shelves on the day I pop down to the library.
In fact, what often drives my choice of novel is visual... the colour, the design on the spine, even the font. So if something grabs my eye, I'll reach for it and give it the 'once over' based on what I see on the cover. Then check the blurb on the back cover for any other information that might trigger a positive response. I will often give a quick skim through the first page of chapter one too.
Anyway, that in a nutshell, is how I choose a book to read. What are your thoughts guys? Leave a comment and I'll post a reply to you.
