The Design of the Novel's Cover

Based on the book(s) you're reading this term, pick one of the covers.

1. Write about how the colours / cover design / illustration / imagery / font appealed to you. Ask yourself why you responded favourably.

2. Did you choose that novel based on something that sprang out at you from the front cover? Were you won over by the packaging of the 'read'? Explain.

3. What elements make for a good front cover? What makes for an unappealing front cover? Explain.

4. Have you ever been won over by a book's front cover, only to find that the story turns out to be nothing like you expected? Explain.

5. Ask the student next to you if you can have a look at the current novel he's reading. Check out the front cover. On first glance, what impressions do you form about the story? Explain. What visual elements stand out? In what way do you think they're effective? Or not effective?

MAJOR ENGLISH ASSIGNMENT - Term 4: Create a reader's blog

In today's cyber-world, a blog (or web-log) is a fun, versatile, interactive way to keep track of your reading and learning experiences. It may be something you continue developing even after this semester - like we said, so much of 'reading' is a journey.

The blog is designed to get us thinking about what we read and how we read, but it's also going to be a place where we regularly make notes on what we like and dislike, help us to better understand the writing techniques that authors use and improve our own skills as writers and storytellers.

One of the main things I want you to take out of this is the reflective aspect - I want you to think about and then document your reading experiences, whether it's with a book the old-fashioned way or how you've engaged with reading / learning / thinking / creating / communicating in new, electronic, web-based ways.

You'll find on my blog a whole bunch of examples of things you could introduce into your own Reader's Blog. Be creative, use your imagination, and happy blogging!
